View Full Version : Robin Guthrie Kicked My Ass at Club Violaine!

I'm too tired to launch into a detailed review, but suffice to say that Robin put on an amazing show. Moments that were reminiscent of Imperial, others that evoked Cocteau Twins memories, and a couple that were full-on MBV style wall of sound assaults (those were my favourites!). The track he played to end the show actually sent a shiver running right through my body like a mild electric charge...I can't recall feeling that at a live event before. And that it was all composed for this one event! I think that's an injustice - other fans would love to hear this music. Thanks again for doing this show, Robin...it was so much better than the Coachella show could have been.
Before I go...let me just say how great it was to meet some of you folks, at long last...Watchlar, Fred, PJ, E-Lo, Andy, Thack, Elizabeth, Dynamine, Doomie (thanks to you too - you rock!) and especially Allison - with whom I got to go on a little adventure after the show. But I'm glad you got home alright, and hope you got some much-needed sleep. Speaking of which, I'm headed off for some myself.

Robin Guthrie Kicked My Ass at Club Violaine!
Robin was amazing
Despite some crackling cables, Robin sculpted a night of absolutely gorgeous walls of bliss and melody
The Sonic Mandarin graced our very fortunate crowd with layers and loops of devastating emotion. Particularly loved the very Cocteau-esque songs he performed with very cool synth, bass, and drum machine arrangements
Definite shades of everything from Moon and the Melodies, Heaven or Las Vegas, Four Calendar Café, Imperial, etc. and Violet Indiana all rolled into many shiver-inducing moments
Thank you Robin and Club Violaine for providing a magical night :)

Thanks Robin.
The suit spoofs and beatnik stuff added personal Bloode humors into the imagery. I gotta say you beat me by a long shot a plane and two trains I only took the Metro! -Doomie is a great and funny MC ain't he?- I was mesmerhypnotized over the music fighting senses between eyes closed: fuller ear, eyes open: fixed on your fingers, eyes all around three projectors, two hitting right wall.
Thanks all you Violaine staffs and laddles alike...
Thankyou, Fred,
for the lemonade streetside conversation a plenty Vermont street, driving my sorry butt to and fro, and unmentions we and PJK know.
on that note: Many thanks to all who showed and "Sorry" for unfamliarities with names -unsound memory system- especially this is a sorry bastard here for still not having introduced myself to all. For me? Classes on re-socialization, social skills, memory hone/expansion pending... 'shrink' factor: social anxiety, relax, get a life, and attend more violaine.
Thanks Sean for this thread.

the show was incredible, heck, the whole experience was incredible. Red Lily played very nicely (i liked the acoustics + laptop take on the sound Doomie...), and Robin Guthrie was simply stunning.
plus, i got to meet him and have my picture taken with him! (i hope it turns out when i go and have my film developed.)
and it was great seeing all the listies, and meeting new ones. heck, there were so many people there: me, Fred, Thack, Oneiric (is that the right spelling), The Flir, Doomie, Mr and Mrs Dewdrops (and their three cute sleeping children), E-lo, Watchlar, Snowcrash, AndyLama, Sean, Allimart, Dynamine and Rabidglow.... i feel like i am leaving some people out, but really -- it was great to be able to hang with everyone again....
oh wait, i forgot that Bethany Curve were there -- not playing, but it was still nice to see them. Richard, Nathan -- are you guys on this forum? it really seems like they should be....
i will try and write up a full review after i have my photos, and i'll post it here...

it was so lovely to meet all of you too :) what a night... i was so beat by the end of it (awake for 22 hours straight) but omfg it was the best night of my life - i don't think i have ever felt so happy
the show was just.. too much for words. and because my friends left me at the club so early (around 5 or 6pm), i met robin walking down the street! and then i got to see him rehearse the material... there were only 4 or 5 or us there, andylama, myself, lars/seekerswho, and two others who i didn't know.... it brought me to tears. i've never seen or heard anything like it. i can't explain the effect it had on me. it was just so fucking beautiful.
thank you for all the hugs and the conversation and EVERYTHING. i LOVED meeting everyone. thanks especially to sean for driving me back to audrey's (what an adventure eh?!) and andylama for chatting with me and making me feel much more comfortable (i was dying of nervousness at the beginning of the evening)...!! it was just a great experience to meet everyone, thank you for making the effort to introduce yourselves to me. i feel like this is a real family here, brought together by something truly beautiful, and i couldn't have been more thrilled to share the experience with you kind folks.......
i don't even know what to say about robin's performance. it was just. ohmygod. i don't know. like my friend tamara said after the show, pretty akin to something complietely religious/spiritual.
i'll make a post about the rest of my wacky vacation (i got home about an hour and a half ago) soon... i have some really hilarious pictures, but i didn't have my camera at the show. i left it in audrey's trunk. damn!

Brittany,
The filmography of John Waters is a very mixed bag, and difficult for some people to stomach. You may know some of his work.
We are playing with references to the wonderful film "Hairspray". If you see no other John Waters movie, see this one. It is hilarious, charming, and just outrageous enough to keep things interesting. It is packed with surprising cameo appearances as well.
The scene in question was where our hero (Tracy Turnblad) was being sabotaged by a catty rich bitch (Amber). The community found out about Amber's dirty dealings and were staging a picket line. One picketer was carrying a sign that said "Amber is an asshole". The O was drawn to look like a big anus. Amber's parents were played by Sonny Bono and Debby Harry!
My recent (tasteless) quote of "NO TEABAGGING!" was from his film "Pecker", which is also pretty wonderful. (FYI, in this film, "pecker" has no sexual connotations whatsoever)
These two films are available as a DVD two-in-one pack, and I wholeheartedly recommend them if you are the sort who can appreciate base humor and highly stylized (or 'stilted' as the case may be) acting. Some fans say that these are his most 'commercial' films, and that may be true, but they are the best I've seen, and I've seen most of 'em.
Go rent 'em.

I haven't seen this one yet. I usually end up seeing his films as rentals, a year or two after release. No particular reason; it just works out that way.
I got the impression that yes, this was a 'return to form', as in the over-the-top jaw-dropping outrageousness of his early work.
Maybe I put this one off because Tracey Ullman grates on my last raw nerve. She's talented, but obnoxious as hell.

Hello everyone who went to this show. I just got home... So I'm checking up to see if I was any good... I wanted to thank phil and the crew for making it possible and everyone else who was there for making it enjoyable and helping me to feel very welcome. The music I played was at an embrionic stage, all written that week for the show, so what you all really experienced was a live demo of some of the things I'll be working on soon. Some may remain instrumentals, some may become songs with VI and some may be forgotten....talking of which, I do need the person who stole my song list to pm it's contents to me... please... :) So... Hello everyone who went to this show...
Hi Robin. Yes, the show was great, and it was nice to finally meet you (after 20+ years of listening to your stuff!). So glad I made the trip.
For me, the best part was getting there 5 hours too early and getting to hear your soundcheck. This was lucky, since I couldn't even squeeze into the main room during the actual performance.
Anyway, the sounds were gorgeous and I look forward to being able to hear them again, in whatever form they may take.
