View Full Version : A general wave of apathy
Phil Lawton

Is it just me or is there a distinct lack of enthusiasm in here of late?
"Lacklustre" is the word I think I'm grasping for. I remember the time (reaches for cardigan, pipe and faithful golden labrador whilst staring wistfully into the middle distance) when this place throbbed with lively discussion, boisterous arguments (sometimes quite confrontational in nature) and some real meat with with to cook up some genuine comedy.
Seems to me (taps out spent tobacco onto labrador's head) that since the Coachella farce, some of the shine has been scuffed of off the place. Is it because Coachella burst a few bubbles, woke dreamers from their dreams and destroyed some of the mystique about the band?
(Adjusts his position in his leather wing chair and throws another peasant onto the fire) I'd speculate that much of what happened in here was always tinged with a deserved and understandable spoonful of expectation; would the unfinished album see the light of day? Would CT reform ever? Was "Milk & Kisses" really the swansong?
(Crosses his legs and accidentally kicks the snoozing, ash-covered labrador in the head, who twitches in his dream as he finds himself being roughed up by the rabbit he had been chasing) Now the answers to those questions seem to be "no", "no" and "yes" respectively, it feels to me, at least, that those of us who have carved, whittled and moulded the ethos of CT.org (Leesa included) have been jostled into staring a bleak reality squarely in the face.
(Lawton's butler enters the room, sets down a tray of koala souffle and proffers a small bowl, which contains Newt Ginrich's nose floating in half a litre of camel's urine. Lawton nods and the butler withdraws from the room) So what are we to do? I've been known to be quite contentious in the past and could be again with a little prompting and/or encouragement. Is there anything left with which to bring a discussion in here to the boil?
Whoff we whmeelly nid to...(swallows the mouthful of koala souffle)...sorry, what we really need to do is ignore what's gone on recently, i.e. the mardy and taciturn behaviour of Ms Fraser and get back to some old-fashioned fun and let rip again. We all seem to have regressed to either being too bloody polite to each other or simply ripping the piss out of Ivo Christ (who is, I am still convinced, Alli Martin).
(The open fire crackles and collapses down to glowing embers. The labrador farts and whimpers in his sleep...somewhere, a grandfather clock gently chimes) Ah, the hour grows late...eleven o'clock....I really must get up before noon more often.
Anyone have any thoughts, similar or other wise?

I think you must have a lot of time on your hands Phil, but I think the point you made was a very valid one. It seems to me as though the Coachella farce has burst the bubble that made this forum so special (I know I'm new but I have been reading past posts before CT pulled out of Coachella). I have a feeling that the next Cocteaufest will restore some of that old charm amongst the forums posts. It will help those of you that go to restore some of the faith in the band that has been damaged since the news was broken.
I think what is in order here is a group hug while Blue Bell Knoll or Heaven or Las Vegas are playing to finally kick out the lacklustre attitude that in your opinion, has befallen this forum of late.
So to summarise: I agree.
(I'll stop rambling now!)

No, mate...just a fast typist and full of shit.
I have to disagree Phil - considering the cancellation of Coachella and the fact that Mmmender hasn't been around to liven things up I think we've done pretty well. I think its great that the forum is still going after so long and it is only to be expected that there will be "lulls" from time to time. It's like GOOD sex, you can't expect to keep it up all the time.

Er, is it ok to agree with both of you?!?
Yes there will be lulls but that can also be down to the fact that the focal point of this forum is the Cocteau Twins. And for the first time since 1998, it looked like they were getting back together. Now that isn't happening then it is natural that people are going to feel disappointed and will voice that disappointment by not visiting the forum or not contributing to any threads.
So yes lulls are expected but I think that given the reason for this lull, then I think that it is perfectly understandable.

Hmm...I know that everyone has been quite chipper, but there's been that certain je ne sais quoie missing of late. Yes, we have lulls occasionally, but even those lulls tend to be peppered with a little angst/friction/lunacy.
None of my opening statement is intended to be a slight on anyone here. Considering the very real level of emotional and financial upheaval that much of the membership appears to have had inflicted upon it, I think that things in general have been quite upbeat in the face of such adversity.
I feel another thread coming on....
"Good sex"...wossat? Is that when the other half lets me keep the light or promises to cry out my name at the crucial moment, rather than that of the window-cleaner?

I don't mind, either way.

Several of us have just participated (or not) in an election where Blair's Labour party got about 35% of the vote retained power with about 55% of the seats in the House of Commons. I don't recall anyone mentioning that here. How's that for apathy ? Or maybe people have other avenues for that expressing views on politics ?
For the record, the British electoral system is a joke that has worn thin.

I'm not sure it's a merely a question of whether or not people are being apathetic, I think it is also down to the lack of discussion topics concerning the band. The biggest one for 7 years was blown out of the water, and I think that for many people that could have been the last straw (given Liz's aloofness). So people might just need time to rediscover the Cocteau magic and I'm sure that in time this forum will be back to normality (oh dear!!).

After an appropriate pause for relection, I think we can safely confirm that it IS apathy.

I'll accept that we haven't had any major verbal punch-ups of late - haven't had to discipline anybody for ages. I think this place suffers when leesa isn't around because she's always been the person that drives things forward when it get's quiet. Having said that several people made the effort during her recent absence and kept things ticking over quite nicely.
I do think you have a point regarding Coachella - it did disillusion people, but also I think people got a little board after the cancellation as the same ground was covered repeatedly, and there are thousands of other forums out there that offer new challenges.
Perhaps as well we have all become a little too comfortable with each other if you like. It can be difficult to have a good confrontational argument with people you regard as friends, and that's what the people here are to many of us I think. Far easier to have that argument with people you barely know, but if you start doing it with the newbies then they're going to bugger off. It can also be difficult for newcomers to work their way in. Several newcomers have mentioned the fact that we have an inner circle that it's difficult to get into. That's another symptom of the fact that we know each other so well. We know what's gone before, we know people's habits and preferences and we make allowances and assumptions based on that knowledge. The result is that for newcomers it can seem like they're being excluded without the regulars even realising it.
So what's the answer? Well if I knew that I'd probably be a wealthy man. I guess that the answer however is down to the users themselves. If we post fluffy bunny threads then we get fluffy bunny conversations. I accept that starting new threads, particularly controversial ones is difficult, but this site can never be more than the sum of its contributors and so at the end of the day it's down to them.
Of course some of us accept we're just middle aged and boring :D
yeah but that spoils it, it's more more fun to not know whether you were joking or not ;)
I'll bear that in mind DOG BREATH xx.

ah Phil, lad, we missed your wit around here for a while. need i remind you that even the ineffable Mr. Lawton needed some "time off" for the forum, last year abouts?
there does seem to be a substantial ebb that followed the massive flow of posts around the Coachella announcement. the problem is that some of our most vocal contributors are on sabbatical. Mmmender was gone. Lucibelle has, apparently, been eaten by an alligator in her home state. Mattadore has been missing (he's passed out in some bar in Boston, no doubt).....
but we have some new contributors, some of whom have even posted here.
i thinks props should be given to Mr. DPrid, who tried hard to keep conversations flowing during our Fearless Leader's convalesence and the general depression that happened lately. i seem to remember Mr. DPrid resurrecting the "Getting to Know You" threads, in order to spur some sort of personal revolations from the new crowd.
so i tend to agree with Shimmerfoil -- we need another big Event to unify the Forums again. i would have hoped that the 19 Crescent performance could have done that, but apparently not. maybe the Toronto Fest will get us all excited again....
otherwise -- well, what would you like to talk about Phil? i'm game.....

BRILLIANT! YOU'RE CORRE- oh no, wait, never mind. aahahahah. no, i'm afraid i'm not nearly smart or brilliant enough to pull off a farce like that complete with estonian artwork to back it up. ahahahahaha. i'm just not that smart! really, i only wish i was so clever :toilet:
i think probably losing kookaburra (though i must admit, he scared me very much because i do not do well with that kind of belligerence/humor, though i have no problem with him specifically) was a big part of the 'being too nice', but i can't really even remember how long he's been gone anyway. ahahaha. and we still have bts, so maybe i am just misreading the entire situation :)
i think not having leesa here was huge too; and the comings and goings of members who have been here for a long time like lucibelle and yes, you, mr phil lawton! i think some of us haven't known what to do!
i agree that people have been trying really hard to include the newbies (me, less so, for which i apologise, and i don't know why i haven't, but it's certainly nothing against you all because i'm thrilled you're here) but we do have a very exclusive inner circle here and i dont think i've been entirely comfortable here until pretty recently, when i'd finally caught on to most of the jokes and everything. but then again i am pretty neurotic and plagued by absolutely ludicrous fears, so i might not really be the person to ask about this :P
there certainly has been a general malaise here though so here are some pictures of kittens! FLUFFY KITTENS, GUYS!

The beauty about the forum is that it's here whenever we want to log in and if we want a break from it then so be it. I don't however think the forum should revolve around the members who have been here for years and that input from newbies is imperative to its survival.

Yeah, I kinda agree here. Not to mention, it has had far more dismal times in the past.
The ostensible reasons for a slump(coachella and absence of mmmender and others) clearly have had some effect, but as dprid said(I think), it is doing well all things considered.
As for spark, mistique of the band, etc...I really doubt that is the case for many members and I think it is reading too much into things....like trying overly much to personify the forum itself......people come and go and that makes ALL the difference in time.
That does't mean there isn't some slump affecting a majority of people....but if there is, it too will pass...and I'm not even assuming that is the case to begin with...namely because I would avoid the idea of a uniform experience for all....people come here for different reasons....so I think there is certainly an issue with success in the eye of the beholder....I don't think this is a the pinnacle of forum activity for any one person really, but it likely far from the worst condition it's been in, for many.

May-18-05, 1:10 PM
Phil,
You're not wrong, though interestingly, I've noticed a sudden surge of activity just this past couple of days. Not sure why, but I welcome it.
I can honestly say that the Coachella incident had zero emotional impact on me. (disclaimer: easy for me to say, as I didn't buy a ticket and transatlantic airfare) I mean, c'mon, CT have been a practical non-entity for years. Their activity (or lack thereof) has very little to do with why I keep coming back here.
I think the lull has a lot to do with Leesa's protracted absence. Clearly, she'd go to great lengths to start new threads just for the sake of keeping momentum. I try to be amusing in my own way, but I am not good at starting threads that go anywhere. I am better at contributing to threads that already contain silliness potential.
I also think that a lot of it is...YOU. You are thee resident comedian, and when you are quiet, so is the forum laugh-track. You think THIS is a lull? You should have seen this ghost town while you were on sabbatical.
I do NOT credit Kookaburra (or his absence) for the liveliness here. He was clever and entertaining, but he had more than a little genuine malice in him, and seemed to be fomenting a lot of alienation toward the end of his reign. I came very close to quitting this forum on account of his abusive sense of 'humor'. In fact, I did quit until Leesa coaxed me back, bless her big heart.
Anyway, I'm here for the people, the group dynamics and to watch you tap your pipe out on the dog's head (I am a lifelong sucker for sight-gags).
Do I get extra essay credit for using the word "fomenting"?
Air kisses and parade-waves to all.

Actually I think I'm going to give up and have a long lie down - I just looked up fomenting in the dictionary. Arse!

Sorry Chaco, but I saw a page full of pictures of Rabbits and Leesa saying that we should stop the thread because some of it was getting abusive (or words along those lines). Perhas I should have looked at the pages nearer the begining of the thread to appreciate what the topic of discussion was but i will say this; I do have sense of humour. It's around here somewhere......

This apathy might a problem with loving a band who are pretty much dormant. I love the Twins' music still after 20 or so years, but have to face the fact that however hard I look in the record racks, nothing new will miraculously appear and any discussion is pretty much specualtion or reminiscence. (I feel the same about Kraftwerk, but always check the K section just in case!).
It seems that Neubauten and Neil Young are about the only artists still making interesting, surprising (not always enjoyable, Neil!) music after a really long time. Bands just don't seem to last long enough these days before they get swallowed up or spat out.

So sexy that, if I were gay, we'd be taking turns throwing clams at each other's genitals on a beach in Mykonos.

i'd agree with the remark about neubauten (though there are a few other artists i'd add to that list) but doesn't the whole Musterhaus thing break your heart? i guess it only makes me sad because there is no way i can afford that subscription right now with school and everything. but also, i think it's really amazing at the same time. i'm so conflicted *hahaha*
Fritter
May-20-05, 7:58 AM
What other artists would you add to that list, Allimart? I'm finding it difficult to find artists with a meaty enough back catalogue AND a possible future to follow.
Yes, the Musterhaus thing is tough financially and it does present a dilemma: it's brilliant musically but a bit scary wondering if one'll still be able to get hold of it in the future when one can afford it. Just thank your lucky stars you're not a Nurse WIth Wound or Coil obsessive, otherwise you'd have to sell your furniture/hair/firstborn to keep up with all their lovely little editions!
One thing though to bear in mind - if there is something you really really really want, get it. I once spent my last £25 on a book written and shot (literally) by William Burroughs, somehow I didn't starve, I'm still here and so is the lovely book.
