View Full Version : Spoof CT Song Titles

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... there was a music paper called Melody Maker who used to love CT and all their works. Around the time of the release of BBK they ran a feature "exclusively revealing the track list of the new Cocteaus album". It basically took the piss out of CT's song titles being a combination of non-conventional sense and arcane references. The only one I taht stuck in my head is Crispy Fiver Blue, (which may only tickle those that know a Fiver is a £5 note, and is blue - but enough of my provincialism) but I remember Robin showing his appreciation and sense of humour about it in a later interview. Or maybe that was gritted teeth he was smiling through?
If it's not too blasphemous, dare I suggest a similar exercise in such a place - maybe based on everyday phrases/things? I'm looking out the window at a pile of breezeblocks labelled "Toplite Standard" and can already hear the opening chords chiming out...

Hmm, I've just spotted the last question in the CT.org Quiz referring to Crispy Fiver Blue. Confused...my mind is going...I can feel it...daisy,daisy...

Fantastic dprid! We've nearly got ourselves an album's worth.
I once saw a device in a US 'outdoorsman' shop called a Goose Flute
(gulp, I sincerely hope no former members of the band are reading this)

I sincerely hope that one particular former member IS reading this and then she will realise that people are still interested in her former band despite her fucking up Coachella

Encourage what? Her return to the music scene? It's getting to the stage where I am wondering if Ms Fraser will ever make music of her own again. I am fed up with her half arsed collaborations with middle of the road "rock stars" - I want her to release an album that will break my heart all over again in the way that HOLV, BBK and Victorialand did. I WANT...I WANT...I WANT crying crying crying

I feel your pain - I scan many sections in record shops pertaining to groups in "extended hiatus" - (Kraftwerk, Beefheart, Big Black (Shellac doesn't do it for me), My Bloody Valentine, The Passions(!!), O Yuki Conjugate, Mr. Bungle and so on )- but these people will and can do their thing only when they want to or can - if that isn't stating the bleedin' obvious. Thank Gawd they held it all together for as long as they did - imagine being a Kissing The Pink obsessive: thin pickings.

Oh, one thing dog ownership has taught me: if you want her to be good in the future, there's no point in mistreating her now. And never rub her nose in it. Only love conquers all.

The chap who served me in the electronics shop today was called Stanton Leander. Now there's a name that should be on a record sleeve...
On a serious note...
Glowing Darkened Light
On a less serious note...
Lesser-Spotted Munty-Flumples In Midsummer Orgies
The second one involved a little plagiarism, i'll admit...
Lots of items around the home and office are full of Cocteaus inspired wording - at a glance to my right the sellotape packet has this "sticky hook spots" (I think that was on Bluebell knoll right?) and next to it "polyfilla hardening" (HOLV?).

Am beginning to wonder if the band themselves didn't play this game when coming up with the original song titles:)

I think you're probably right mate! Difference is they got paid for it and were probably on quite a lot of drugs at the time!

That's a roger, daddy-o. Best not to shatter anymore illusions. (I never had the same respect for the theme for Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em once I'd found out that it's simply the Morse Code for that very phrase: dit-dit-dit da-da-da da-da-dit etc.)

And another thing: the theme music for "Softly Softly" was actually the music for "Z Cars" but with the sheet music turned upside down, I shit you not!!! Sometimes I think these musos are merely toying with us...

This is fun, but I'll stop now..I remember the "Crispy Fiver Blue" one from MM too, but can't recall the other joke titles either.
Ainderby Quernhow Quisling
curious, I live near there!
Ainderby is a Scandinavian place name and means the village belonging to Eindrithi, a Viking whose name meant 'sole-ruler'. Quernhow, which has also been spelled Whernhowe and Whernou means mill-hill, the first element deriving from the Old Norse Kvern, a mill stone. How or Howe, was an old word for a hill and is a common element in Yorkshire place names .
