ok i'm sure most (if not all) of you have noticed that on the back of the garlands sleeve it says........
"Déar carol, Wé shall both die in your rosary: Elizabeth"
now......if anyone else out there has a copy of the cindytalk "camouflage heart" album
btw cindytalk's vocalist was gordon sharp...who worked on the this mortal coil album "it'll end in tears".....robin, simon and liz all worked on it as well but simon and gordon did tracks like "kangaroo" and "a single wish" together.......but i'm digressing.
anyway if you look at the insert for "camouflage heart" it says.......
"elizabeth....is there room in the rosary for three"
anyone else notice this??

you read my mind, i have that record and was gonna
post about that too.
:p i love that record
There is the obvious connection with that Peel session as well as the contribution to ‘It’ll end in tears’ but I wonder whether anyone here road-tested his mainstay band Cindytalk? If you did, how did you rate it?
General thoughts on the career of Gordon Sharp?
(He wanted to be a CT didn’t he?)
I love Gordon's voice, and I have a few CINdYTALK releases, each one of them is very, very different from the other. Generally though, it is quite unlike anything by This Mortal Coil or CT. My favorite album is the double LP In This World, which is a mix of ambient piano and found-sound pieces with very abrasive guitar, noisy industrialish tracks. Interesting little bit of trivia -- on the liner notes of the early 80s release Camouflage Heart there is a quote, "Elizabeth, is there room in the rosary for three?"
I was fortunate to catch them live in the LA area a few years back, and the show was perhaps the loudest and most aggressive thing I have ever seen. It was so loud I actually had to leave, something I have never done.
Apparently Gordon is fond of cross-dressing, at the show he was wearing this pink fluffy thing!
I think he lives in Los Angeles now, he sometimes plays underground shows at a local club called The Smell under a different noise-guise, Bambule.
Gordon is the best, but can be very challenging to say the least. I have not really dived into his Bambule stuff, but heard it's more noise than anything else really.
Cindytalk (or as he writes it CINdYTALK) is great, and very worthwile checking out.
Do check out their last album, Wappinschaw, if you get a chance, it's pretty accessible and holds some great tunes. Thankfully it includes all 4 tracks of the totally amazing Secrets & Falling EP, albeit some if not all tracks are re-recorded.
His 1st, Camouflage Heart, should appeal to Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil fans and is a true classic.
The 'In This World' album can indeed be described with ambient piano tracks and industrial pieces. These were actually 2 albums with the same name released on the same date by Midnight Music, the CD version holds both on one.
And finally, 'The Wind Is Strong...' is a soundtrack-like album, but not very interesting much like most movie soundtracks (this album might actually have been recorded for a movie that was never finished or something like that).
Apparently he's releasing a new 7" under the Cindytalk name soonish after a 9-year hiatus (the Wappinschaw album together with the Prince Of Lies 7" was his latest feat).

i enjoyed Gordon's contributions to THIS MORTAL COIL, but never explored him beyond that arena because sometimes....eerily enough...when he'd hit a certain pitch i'd be flooded with images of Tiny Tim...

Thanks Watchlar... now I can't browse THIS thread either. You have a way of finding disturbing pictures. First the clowns, now Tiny Tim... It's a sad, sad world.

I think, before people realise just how tragically un-hip I really am, that I'll refrain from asking who Gordon Sharp is.
He invented the combination ghetto-blaster/microwave oven, yes?

I love cindytalk when they're quiet, I find it a lot stronger than when it's loud and noisy...
I don't really have a preference for just the loud or just the quiet songs... most of it is great.
And of course Gordon also is Macbeth (or MacBeth?) that contributed that 1 song to one of the Volumes (Volume 5 I believe) which Robin also worked on.
This thread just makes me want to play my Cindytalk stuff.... but all that stuff is on the other side of the ocean / pond. Bummer.

i've heard of Gordon Sharp, but who the fuck is this Tiny Tim bloke?

If you've got 'It'll end in tears' his tonsils grace Kangaroo and A single wish. If you've got the Peel Session CT's , the one with Dear Heart on, he sings backing. (Does anyone know how that came about BTW?)
All I knew was that he had a band called Cindytalk but they were much darker/louder than the vocal on Kangaroo (which I adore). If he'd sung like Kangaroo all the time I would have bought everything by him. However he claimed not to be interested and only consented to sing Kangaroo for Ivo because he liked the line "Oh I want you, like a Kangaroo".
I DO actually have Camoflage Heart LP somewhere but I never gave it a chance which is why I asked the experts opinions.

This is a beautiful quote !
BTW,who was this Carol Liz referred to in Garlands ?
ballerina
If my memory is correct, Liz talks about Carol in the '83 Dutch Vinyl issue (you know, the one with the flexi). Apparently she is her best friend and the album made her think of Carol... 'this is sooo Carol'. And that's all I think she said. I don't have the magazine with me, so I can't translate the literal words for you.
But MJ.... You seem to be the article & clippings-goddess on this board, I'm surprised you didn't come across that name before yourself. ;)

I did in fact meet Mr Sharp as a nervy scrap of a lad during my abortive term at St. Andrews University, Scotland after a Mary Margaret O'Hara gig in Edinburgh. I rather squirmingly recall him getting quite annoyed with my over-enthusiastic attempts to engage the truly otherwordly, very sweet and ever so tiny Mary Margaret in conversation backstage afterwards, as he was trying to sell her the idea of doing a cover version (thats her and him, not him and me, nor, indeed, me and her) of Roberta Flack's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' at the time. When I brought up the blessed Cocteaus as we ambled outside, he referred rather sourly to Robin's tongue-in-cheek remark about their making music being like going to the toilet, which he took to mean RG 's assessment of CT's output was on a par with excrement. Like a lot of young Scottish men, he spoke very quietly (by contrast with Cindytalk's apparently deafening live racket) and yet exuded a kind of low-level menace. But, Gordon, if you're reading this, thanks for putting me on to Lynch and Tarkovsky - you made an artsy student even artsier.
Anyway, the Flack thing set me thinking (if it hasn't already been discussed) -- are there any songs (leaving aside the preposterous Frosty the Snowman/Winter Wonderland shenanigans) you wish the Cocteaus/Liz had covered before they self-destructed?

I've just come across this thru a French website .
Interesting bits of info , like :
As an epitaph, a dedication to Liz Fraser on "CAMOUFLAGE HEART" closes the period of collaborations: "Elizabeth... is there room in the rosary for three", the rosary being that of the Cocteau Twins song Garlands, where we die without end. As an echo to this amorous message, Liz offered Gordon a title on "TREASURE": Pandora (for Cindy).
In 1992, Gordon collaborated with Robin Guthrie (COCTEAU TWINS) on an unedited song recorded for VOLUME 5 (the famous series of compilations + magazines by Rob Deacon). Hidden under the name of MACBETH, he offers his interpretation of the song refused by Ivo -- the music of this Help Me Lift You Up is sumptuous, eclipsing the version by THIS MORTAL COIL. The voice is soft and tight, grating and silky. With a wink toward his Scottish friends, he envisioned using Lucybelle (the daughter of Liz Fraser and Robin Guthrie) for background-babblings, but with Ivo having already "hired" her for the album "BLOOD" by THIS MORTAL COIL (listen carefully to the album!), he renounced the idea.

I just included it so that Liz 's dedication made sense . And the Lucibelle info !
I devotedly read everything you post !:D
Thank you very much Maria Jose.... very informative article. I didn't know the Pandora dedication, it makes perfect sense now. Now... I need to ask you a very personal question...:
Will you be my search engine??? :D
Btw.. I thought the collaboration between Gordon Sharp and Black Rose was disappointing

The first This Mortal Coil recording must have been quite something , for all the intensity the artists involved had to throw into it,making them feel so vulnerable.
And I think Gordon Sharp must really like Liz a lot !

Melody Maker , April 16 , 1988 . . .
A dagger of a voice. You might have heard it before, joining The Cocteau Twins on radio sessions and occasional live performances. Or, before that, fronting a forgotten Scottish pop group called The Freeze who released two semi-spectacular singles before falling out and apart.
Between The Freeze and Cindytalk, Sharp was invited to join Duran Duran. This is actually true. Later, HE WAS ASKED TO "JOIN" THE COCTEAU TWINS. Both prospects made him shake his head very firmly. He just wasn't interested. Cindytalk was interesting to him. More than that. Cindytalk had to be. "Camouflage Heart" sounds like a record that had to be. Every last tortuous stab of it. It left Sharp, again, emptied.
MJ, I love you, I really do. I thought I was good with getting info from the web, but you've got me beat. Duran Duran??
And why the f*#&! didn't I make mp3's from my Cindytalk stuff back in Europe the last time I was there??? I need to get a healthy dose of his work!!

Yeah... I read about it on the 4AD board too. I just think it's a little expensive ($14 + Sales Tax + shipping)... I'm a little put off by that and not sure if I should order it or not. Even if there's only going to be 150 copies of it.

Seems like he IS Gordon . . .
I don't know... this is the internet after all. It's kinda difficult to check if it's really him. If it is... fine, I'm glad he stops by and shows some interest. If it isn't him, that's fine too, really.
Maybe he has to promote himself to sell all those 150 7"s? If you end up buying one, let me know if it's worthwile!
It sounds like its him, although it was my understanding that he was in California (he DJd and played under Brambule guise a while back in Los Angeles semi-regularly), but Hong Kong is just a trans-Pacific jump away I guess . . .

yes my relationship with the cocteaux goes back a long way.
we grew up not far from each other in central scotland.my
band, the freeze [1976-1982] often played in grangemouth,
home to robin & liz.robin's older brother was the local promoter.
robin's earlier bands sometimes supported us and liz was
nearly always in the audience.she danced like a punk dervish!
liz and i always had an [unspoken] internal connection,i imagine
that's why we sent those messages back and forth to each other
on our records.yes,i be the cindy of pandora.if i recall,i introduced
liz to the work of louise brooks [silent film actress] and her most
famous role, lulu,in the german expressionist film "pandora's box".

"maria jose, you are most welcome... memories of singing with liz,hmmm...
my most vivid memories were doing live shows with them actually [the peel
sessions were quickly done and i imporovised my contributions,i hadn't even
heard the songs before.likewise with TMC,i hadn't heard kangaroo before
recording it],it was singing live with CT that ivo saw me and decided he wanted my involvement on a greater scale.and it was him who asked me if i might be interested in actually joining the band.i never found out if he had discussed that thought with them or not.i said no immediately and it was never mentioned again.anyways,i remember the feeling of those live shows was electric...we didn't "really" rehearse so all my singing was pure improvisation .. it was scary and exhilarating at the same time. i also remember being barefoot on stage and smearing my feet and legs in lipstick [for some weird early 1980's reason].hehe.it was all very dry ice & ethereal.
but i think our voices merged really well, considering.

the freeze released a 7inch single in 1980 called "celebration",
it was written for and dedicated to louise brooks.i even sent
her a copy to her home in rochester, new york.she would have
received it "shortly" before she died.at that time she was only
a footnote in the history of cinema culture.i came across her
in an article in the observer [newspaper UK] magazine in 1979.
i was first transfixed by the striking images but then awed by
her story.the intellect and the mischief.stunning.i then tried to
research more into her life but found it almost impossible to find
any really substantial information.the french loved her but nobody
else seemed to at that time [jean luc godard had tipped his hat
to her in the character of nana in his wondrous film "vivre
sa vie].this was a couple of years or so before her book "lulu in
hollywood" was published.after the freeze single came out, with
a mesmerising picture of her on the cover,i was inundated by
people asking who she was,so many that i had to write a pamphlet
on her to hand out to those that were interested.by that time,
she was beginning to get the recognition she deserved, both as
an actress and as a genuinely original woman of intellect
and substance.
p.s. i had to fight with the people who had the rights to the picture
i wanted to use [it's in the freeze section of www.cindytalk.org], at
first they refused me permission to use the one i had requested and
sent me a bunch of other possibilities but i was determined to use
one image in particular... i kept at them and eventually they agreed.
it was worth the fight as that particular image is stunning, almost as
cool as the first [big] pic maria jose posted, the one with the ultra cool

Wow! I was always wondering who "carol" and "Cindy" were!
Maria Jose, please help! Do I have this right? :
Okay, Carol is Liz's best friend, hence the quote on Garlands and the song on BBK, Carolyn's Fingers (I would imagine).
And Cindy is Gordon Sharp's nick name, hence Pandora (for Cindy)
Pandora being the Louise Brooks film. I looove Louise Brooks btw! And real old films!
And is that really Liz and Robins baby on TMC's Blood?
and Gordon does a cover of Help me lift you up on Volume 5?
Whew, please tell me if I have this right.....
Also I always wanted to pick up a copy of a cindytalk cd, because i always liked Gordon Sharps voice. From what I'm reading I guess thier first one is the one to get?
PaleClouded:
If you enjoy early 80s music like Siouxsie Sioux, Birthday Party, Cocteau Twins, Cure et cetera... yes, pick up Camouflage Heart. You'll love it.
All albums are very different, which is a good thing... no need for recycling. I personally would recommend Wappinschaw for starters, but that's just my opinion.
And I think your statements are pretty accurate... I don't know about Carolyn's Fingers or the baby on Blood though :)

World Serpent in the UK used to distribute all of Cindytalk's music. Even though I believe all (?) of his albums have been rereleased on Touched Recordings, you are more likely to come across a Midnight Music release.
So it seems as everything is out of print these days. World Serpent does have 2 (CHEAP!!) vinyls on stock: Wappinschaw and the very limited Prince Of Lies/Muster 7" (only 922 exist).
World Serpent's URL:

They also distribute Elijah's Mantle's label De Nova Da Capo in case you are interested in anything Dead Can Dance related.

E-Lo... sorry i didn't mean to ignore your question,i'm just a bit scatty,
is all.i'm sure i'll pass through LA again,i have a return ticket from HK so
i'll prob'ly use it sooner or later.yes i was involved in the setting up of
an underground soundsystem in the LA region [darkmatter].the smell
was one of our usual party venues.we had a fairly open music policy
but we tended toward experimental electronix [somatic responses/dan hekate/lory d/pcp/praxis records/widerstand/dj scud/john weise/venetian snares/doormouse/daniel menche/black mass plastics etc etc] but you
would also hear cindytalk/mogwai/god speed you black emperor and
other non-[obviously] electronic stuff in there as well.i also instigated a
darkmatter cinema policy as well.we had a huge screen behind the dj
table and at each party i'd show an array of world cinema classics
[to the soundtrack of "extreme electronics & splintered beats"],
such films as tarkovsky's nostalgia/luis bunuel's exterminating angel/
dziga vertov's the man with the movie camera/gw.pabst's pandora's box/
pasolini's medea & salo/nagisa oshima's in the realm of the senses
and many many others...the effect of intoxicating sounds and highly
stimulating images was heady indeed.shame you never made it along.
the soundsystem is still active, although i think the smell has since been
shut down by the fire department.but there will hopefully be some more parties in the future.i'll still be sending my filmic choices back to LA for
future showings and hopefully will attend myself soon.
keep in touch, maybe i can let you know next time darkmatter throws
a party.

traaaaa
cx
the fields of athenry
By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."
Chorus:
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity."
Chorus
By a lonely harbor wall, she watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived to hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

Who could forget those other timeless football classics:
"You're gonna get your f*ckin' 'ead kicked in!"
Or
"Who ate all the pies?
Who ate all the pies?
YOU fat bastard! YOU fat bastard!"
Or the deeply philosophical
"Who's the bastard in the black?
Who's the bastard in the black?
Who's the ba-a-astard in the black?"
And the deeply political
"You're not singing any more
You're not singing any more
You're not si-i-inging any more!"
Tennyson couldn't have topped any of those, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Celtic invaders discern heady virtues in the forgotten cup
Kevin McCarra
Tuesday May 20, 2003
The Guardian
The Uefa Cup final in Seville tomorrow is already a phenomenon. The Spanish transport system is seizing up under its demands and, with trains fully booked, 3,000 Celtic supporters are reported to be travelling from Malaga on mopeds. That line of scooters is only one short column of the invasion force.
With awe and concern, officials at the Glasgow club guess that 80,000 of their fans will storm the Andalucian city, even though they probably hold no more than 35,000 of the 52,000 tickets. All this for the final of Europe's wallflower tournament.

Except in Japan , that is !
I was quite involved in the whole World Cup affair,if anybody you knew came to Osaka,
they heard my voice on the PA here and there
Everyone was horrified , there were seminars for shop owners on how to deal with hooligan violence , etc .
Then they came and blended ever so nicely in the oh - how-polite atmosphere and became the "amiable army " . . .
Not to mention the Becks love affair .
Except for the obligatory 'hi ha hondelul' (which translates as "di da dogs' dick") I don't know any Dutch stadium chants and this is mostly directed at referees. And it certainly doesn't achieve any level of prose whatsoever. Except for parts of the Portsmouth chants that is.

Thanks, MJ. I must say, he is quite a hot little number in those silky frocks.
My vacation was less than I'd expected. I went on a quest for the Holy Grail and settled for a clean McDonald's in a country in which it's not a faux pas to flush your soiled paper down the toilet. I also learned a fancy new dance.

Shall we switch brands ? :D
How 'bout chocolate milk?
Maybe I'll just go to the store and get my fix.... it won't be the same though.

Ingredients :
Serpentskin (two pieces) ,1 peppermint pig,50cc love's easy tears, 100 grs Melonella , a pinch of rococo , 3 Sugar Hiccups , some squeeze wax and a few fluffy tufts .
Mix well , stir . . . Add . . . God ! All these magic books are so heavy . . .
Just working on it !
I think you need a little bit more Iceblink Luck to pull it off...
And watch out for those fumes.... I don't want you to end up Blind, Dumb and Deaf
