Mezzanine welcomes one of their most eclectic and colorful sets to date. Monday, October 17th Robin Guthrie of the famed Cocteau Twins will be performing a solo set that will feature songs and melodies written specifically for this very night. Along with him will be San Francisco's very own Halou performing their only live performance of 2005.

After a 15-year stint with dreamy landscape pop band, Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie has continued to pursue music. In addition the recent Coachella performance with the Cocteau Twins and his other band Violet Indiana, Robin is again surprising the masses with VERY rare and once-in-a-lifetime solo performances, Robin Guthrie, armed with his guitar, lap top, and visual projections, will be playing a never-before-seen and never-to-be-seen-again show at Mezzanine. Robin is set to wrap up the exciting year with a number of exclusive performances in London, Los Angles and San Francisco. Starting in San Francisco on Oct 17th at Mezzanine, Robin will be perform a selection of new songs from his upcoming album, Continental, as well as material to be release on exclusively on Itunes which will be recorded here in San Francisco. Building on the ground breaking video montage last with Lumiere, Robin will continue to take his vision to the next level with additional footage to be shown for the first time at the San Francisco show. With an abundance of new and exclusive material to showcase in the upcoming shows, new and old fans alike may find that the legacy and genius of the Cocteau Twins stems from a man now living in the pastoral landscape of France.

To solidify this line-up are another rare act. Playing their only live performance of 2005, San Francisco's very own Halou. Although it has been almost 2 years since the band's last EP release, Halou has hardly disappeared. Over the past 2 years the band has completed 2 forthcoming albums and have been highly visible as producer/remixers making records with such artists as DJ SHADOW, LYRICS BORN, FRANK SINATRA, ROD STEWART, LOW, plus the score for the highly anticipated film Quality of Life which hits theaters Oct 12 [www.qualityoflife-themovie.com]. While still embracing electronics as the core of their instrumentation, live cello, acoustic double bass, and drums further explore the juxtaposition of the organic and electronic sound that is Halou. Known best for their definitive electronic collages and emotionally rich vocals, the trio will be opening the show featuring cellist Zoe Keating of Rasputina.

Oh my god! Someone throw water at me. He played "Oomingmak?!" I should have gone. Damn me! Send me to the guillotene. I am so heartbroken.

Just to hear one Cocteau Twin's song would have been blissful. I love "Oomingmak", my favorite on Victorialand. I am surprised they never did that one live in their concerts.

well, unless its a new song that sounds like...exactly like oomingmak, yes he did. it took me a minute...thinking "wow, that sounds like...oh no he wouldnt..but oh yessss, it is....omg...." the crowd seemed really appreciative after that one. they seemed really into every song, actually. robin got a great response. much better than the last SF show.

victorialand is one of my favorites...and just wow.

the show started way late. halou played FOREVER and while i guess they are good at what they do, it is just not my thing anymore. their sound was TERRIBLE. felt bad for them. they seemed excited to be playing with RG and then to sound like that...yuck.
robin did not go on until after 11 PM and since i had a 2 hour drive ahead of me and a non-negotiable start time at work of 7 AM i couldnt even stay to watch robin finish his set. my heart really broke to leave. i am hoping i saw most of it and did not miss too much.
robin looked great. i only got to talk to him for a minute when we first got there. was hoping to stay after to chat, but i had no idea it would go so late. i didnt even get home until after 2 am and had to be up at 6. my old ass cannot handle this...someone kill me please. :spear:

but really, i NEED all of the music i heard him play last night. anyone know when it will be released?

so very very beautiful....

He didn't play Oomingmak (at least I would be embarrassed not to recognize it if it was played).

I am terrible with reviews but... Zoe was sampling herself as she was playing the cello. I haven't heard any Rasputina but I think I'll have to listen to some today. Zoe also played with Halou but unfortunately, there was a very loud buzzing throughout the entire Halou set, which was quite distracting. The singer apologized, saying they expected some technical difficulties in their first show in a while and "When life gives you lemons, you bitch about it." Robin would take a few sips and briefly look at the screen during songs. There were yells of "Robin!" and "beautiful!" He replied to some comments but I couldn't hear what he said. Near the end of Robin's set, the video stopped playing and someone yelled out "It's all you now!"

It is the kind of night that inspires me to want to perform music for others.

And if someone knows the answer, a friend wants to know what Robin uses on his laptop while he's playing

HELLONEW TO THISHERE GOES having Robin's show here in san francisco on the night of the full Aries moon was quite a challenge..i was up at 5 am to see the lunar eclipse and spent the rest of the spectacularly warm fall day focusing on the arrangements for the 3 friends i had invited to the show. one cancelled due to illness....at dinner i just looked at him and said...'you look like you need to be home in bed'...he took my advice...so, for whatever reasons the universe arranged it, my other two friends and i converged in the filthy stinking downtown alley known as Jessie Street for the Mezzanine show shortly after 7pm....tickets were supposed to be available at 7...... i already had gotten tickets on line....i guess i just wanted to be sure of getting aboard on the last ship...you tell me......there were actually a couple of music seekers who are lovers ahead of us...so we stood there, the five of us... for a long time....in the fading gloriously warm evening..... i had to fight off the paranoia.... maybe we were in the wrong alley in the wrong city on the wrong day..... what WOULD happen if there was an earthquake......my friends and i hadn't been together in the same place for many many months......slowly people began to appear in the alley.. refugees from the Monday zombie metropolis converging in that awfull, smelly place..soon there was a line half way down the dingy putrid seismically dangerous early 1900's brick building lined block...we were forced to stand until our backs were breaking...the ground was covered in oil and all the assorted products of human civilization and organic debris that do not have the benefit of benevolent microbes and unmolested time to decay properly..the barbed wire topped chain link fences provided the only support for our failing frames............................i realized there that lifetimes of running from monsters and hungry animals was nearly over and i could actually say hello to the couple in line behind us..a lovely couple of 9 years..she originally from France with a lovely accent..they were fans of the san francisco band Halou to be opening for Mr. Guthrie....i only vaguely remember the name Halou from a Cocteau Twins tribute band CD that i would still like to possess... suddenly after 8 we were liberated from the momentary death camp by dashing young men dressed in black and wired for communication to the mother ship....the doors opened... we entered into the colored spotlight lit industrial space and eased down into the plush black vinyl couches...there was much activity at the stage area in the corner of the large brickconcretestainlesssteelblackironwoodbeamedhigc eilinged room...i had been to the last Cocteau Twins Milk and Kisses show at the gorgeous ancient Warfield theatre in 1997 or so.....................where would the world be without beautiful music................... ctblue i have to go now..didn't get to bed til after 1am :pride: ..sfjim

haha, thats what i want to know. i could swear it was *something* from victorialand...but that album tends to all blend together for me. whatever song it was caused someone in the crowd to yell out "cocteau twins!" when it was done...

I was lying back on the couch after several drinks and distinctly heard the riffs of An Elan merging into my skull....as the sound faded, i listened to myself as i yelled out..."you stole that from the Cocteau Twins!!""" someone near me mumbled something that felt like agreement.....Liz presence was palpable..... i could hear her singing....we pray for you, children of love...........and for ourselves............. ballerina

Much of his solo material peformed for Lumiere/19 Crescent sounds extremely Cocteau, so not surprised one of his songs sounded like Oomingmak. I remember even hearing a bit of the ole' DX7 bells from Treasure at 19 Crescent

but as i've had more time to think about it, i heard many many CT(Mr. G) riffs throughout the set...it was the An Elan one that really stirred my pangs of CT lust to breaking..........i had to shout it out, to the heavens...that someone, somewhere might hear my agony.........all i can say is it was a wonderful evening with the Cocteau Twins minus Simon and Elizabeth and a real drummer!! during Robin's set, i spoke with the singer for Halou, who sounds to me VERY influenced by the Portishead singer and Liz...a long time CT fan.........and i was able to verbalize my sense that Robin seemed so lonely up there by himself...she seemed to think otherwise, that Robin was really enjoying himself...and, as a musician, i understand that quite well. i can appreciate that personal karma things can easily overshadow creative sensibilities.....but in this particular case, and i really know virtually NOTHING about the real relationships between Robin, Liz and Simon, except that Robin and Liz were married and have a child...well, do you need to know anything more than that??!! Love is ....well,.....covered with thorns..how do you think they keep the antelope from eating it all up.....?? anyways...in this particular case, as an individual, to take advantage of this opportunity to help the Earth over this particular hump in time and space...so, you see, the way i see....is..it's not just for me..........in fact, it's SELFCENTEREDNESS that's the cause of ALL the problems...............i've been involved with an Indian born American Guru http://www.maharaji.net since 1971........i hope you're laughing or being entertained at least.....but i did just have some breakfast and am still in the glow of the Ariesian lunar eclipse....and all that came with it....well, i DO know, for a fact that Robin has 4 planets in Capricorn, and Liz has 4 planets in Virgo..if they're not going to save us, who on planet Earth can???..holy shit,,just looking at Liz' chart....this could be a very intense time for her.....Robin.,please call her.......sorry..but i think i need to post this now..

Liz' moon and stars have all crunched together in one corner of the sky, and the whole mess is hiding behind a black hole. The little white line you see is not the tail of a comet; it is a FAX cable.

When Guthrie is performing solo, give him his due. It is very rude to yell things about CT or Liz at him. I hope like hell that doesn't happen at the LA show next month.

I'm not trashing you, sfjim1, Im just sayin'. It would be like people cheering for you by yelling the name of an ex-girlfriend!

how could Robin steal anything CT!!! it was just my way of trying to say..'i wish you birds could get over your difficulties and resume your Earthly duties.......' there is an old quote 'one person by himself can do very little, but two together can do infinitely more...'..not to mention 3,4,5, etc...Jefferson Airplane, Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young....two of my favorite combinations that are timeless classics because of the collaboration of many talents..do you know 'If I Could Only Remember My Name'......how about the song 'Dark Star' from, i think it is LIVE DEAD?? as beautiful as Robin's music is, and i do intend to get the albums as soon as possible..., it was almost.....could i say.....sad....i mean, i almost cried real tears.....human squabbles are so.......ridiculous........and usually irrational...and ballerina i still haven't heard the singles from FourCalendarCafe.....!!!! maybe that's the solution!!

robin, you have misunderstood my post ...i wasn't sad about you're music.....I was missing Liz and Simon!!!!...in fact, i thought i could hear her singing........i was just thinking....'Mezzanine' sounds sort of familiar...doesn't it......'Teardrop'...???? actually, your performance was quite inspiring..i went out on a hunt for 'Imperial' this morning and am listening to it as we speak............................................. ..................................i'm a confirmed polygamist.....(not to be confused with promiscuous).....the Koran(and other religious texts) say you can have multiple 'wives'....but you have to be nice(and sensitive) to all of them at the same time.......now that's a trick....!!! i know you can do it////......i think we humans generally love to share, but i don't think we can handle feeling abandoned...which translates to jealousy, fear, and anger.... it's a very delicate balancing act at this point, as we're not taught how to do it in our Christian culture....but i think we'll get the hang of it eventually..it's the only thing that makes sense.....biologically, psychologically, mathmatically, grammatically, realistically, genetically, and artistically........? (my theoretical hypothesis) i've watched alot of chimpanzee nature shows.....Cocteau Triplets....!!! etc,,,,,/? a chorus of angels....Liz, Enya, Sinead.....Barbara....??,,,,,....

listening to it again.....for certain... now, there should be some charts here...not sure if these utilities are operational

sfjim1
Oct-26-05, 2:49 PM
you might see something interesting....of course, the birth times and locations have been estimated...so the rising signs and houses are probably wrong...and the moons might be a little off..possibly by as much as 6 degrees one way or the other.....my interpretation of this information is quite appropriate, i think.....the four Capricorn/Virgo trines(60 degrees) suggest idyllic compatibility, Robin's Mercury at 24 Capricorn is at a 90 degree angle('square') to both Liz' Mars and opposing Jupiter which suggests communication problems..., but these are only challenges to be overcome through perserverance and effort

E-Lo
Oct-26-05, 2:49 PM
Don't you need their birth times for an accurate chart?

sfjim1
Oct-27-05, 5:34 PM
to have the accurate moon sign(which moves 1/2 degrees or so every hour, and the correct rising sign (which changes every two hours of the day). but if you don't have those, you still get the rest of the planetary information, which is quite a lot.....the other planets don't move very much in a day, so you get a fairly accurate position...
