let me ask you sumptin? Would you rather listen to Bing Crosby sing Frosty the snow MAN or Ms. Fraser???? Im going for the Fraser bit... I heard the Cocteau version in a Department store once, and I was happy that it was her and not elvis.... JMO....

Bing Crosby.

Why do any bands make unusual or out-of-character music? Mainly because someone asked them to I suspect, or they were pissed and thought it was a good idea.

Not wishing to get drawn into pointless speculation, maybe they saw a parallel between the Cocteaux' ocean of sound and the Phil Spector Wall of Sound? The two songs are highlights of Spector's Christmas Album.

I seem to recall that they were asked to contribute to a Christmas album.

Guthers will know.

i think the fact that they all had kids also helped them decide to record "snow".

I don't see what's so wrong with it. But then I JUST received it for Christmas and I am so thrilled to have it.

i think the snow ep is lovely, i adore winter wonderland!

btw, i'll state it once again that the snow ep isn't rare, that's cocteau myth #1.

I love the Snow ep. Maybe it helps that I wasn't familiar with those songs since Christmas isn't that big a deal over here. Whatever you think of the songs, they are executed in typical Cocteau fashion.

I'm just glad i can now participate in these EP/singles discussions!! I got the new 'boxset' for christmas, and can't explain how great its been to hear virtually all these tracks for the first time!

I won't use this space to hijack this thread and go on about the songs that i like best tho.

So i'll just say that i quite like the Snow EP, especially Frosty The Snowman. The two songs sound like the Twins ignoring the music fashion police and just doing something throwaway and fun. And yet they did it well enough that it didn't end up sounding throwaway at all, but rather something sweet and interesting.

"Snow" was the first thing I played when I got my copy of L2V. I thought both songs were excellent.

I remember an interview from around that time suggesting that the CT intended to record some Christmas songs every year and do a similar type release but just like a lot of CT plans...seems it never materialized. I remember waiting the next year for a similar single. I always wondered why they did those songs in the first place though too.

Kids...

My darling daughter, who is 6, kept requesting the Snow songs these past weeks.

For Christmas, I gave her a Cocteau compilation to play in her new Disney Princess CD player. I'm AMAZED to hear her sing along to "Sugar Hiccup" rather accurately - whatever "accurate" means in Lizspeak...

One of my parenting goals - indoctrinate my offspring to the CT sound - and many other sounds - long before their pre-teen years!

Worked for me. My son (11) knows what few words are decipherable, sings along when he thinks no one is listening, and still falls asleep on cue to Victorialand (I started that when he was still in utero).

What tickles me the most is when he gets excited hearing CT in public (recently the CT versions of Frosty/Winter Wonderland were playing almost everywhere we shopped).

I'm sorry, but I have to interject. Cocteau Twins could record a version of "Winter Wonderland" and it would be incredible. Oh, wait...they did that, didn't they? Well. they could record a version of.................

"Silent Night" b/w "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" would get my vote.

I draw the line at "Der Fuehrer's Face". Some things are even beyond Guthrie's magic touch.

It's Vicky Pollard - a character from the BBC comedy show Little Britain. An example of chav scum at its finest :(

Can we revert to the term "twatty pond-life" now, Beth? I always thought that had a poetic ring to it....

"I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er war and strife
When all at once I saw a host
Of twatty pond-life"

or

"Stands the clock at ten to three
Is there a Pop-tart still for tea?
Smashed bus-stops, old u'ns mugged after dark
By the twatty pond-life in the park?"

Dprid summed it up concisely. We don't get Little Britain here in Arizona, but a friend of mine recently loaned me the DVDs of the first season. It's mostly "discomfort humor", but has some moments of cringe-free hilarity.

I find the Vicky Pollard character to be massively hilarious, as (s)he talks a mile-a-minute and makes no sense whatsoever. A great caricature. She is what what we Americans would call "trailer trash", a pejorative that didn't fall out of fashion like "chav" evidently did.

If you are interested, you can see some (tiny) video clips here:

Myfanwy: So, how did the audition go?

Daffyd: It was a complete waste of time, the director said he couldn't see me as Hamlet. I'm sorry Myfanwy, but the Llandewi Breffi Amateur Dramatics Society is completely homophobist.

Myfanwy: Oh well, what audition speech did you do?

Daffyd: It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls.

I got the lurgy. Yeah I know because there was this whole fing 'cause I was down the arcade and Kelly flobbed on Destiny and a bit of it landed in my hair because Kelly hates Destiny because Destiny told Warren that Kelly pads her bra. It's true - Nathan reckons he put his hand down there and pulled out a bag of Jelly Tots.
