View Full Version : Cocteau Twins Reformation Petition

Feb-8-06, 1:38 PM
Hello,
I just had a dream a couple of nights ago about the band reforming. I know, wishful thinking and all, but I was wondering if a pettion was ever made to the members to give it another go? A part of me really doesn't want to let them go and I feel that there are a lot of people out there that also feel this way. What do you all think?

I'm in no place to say that it couldn't happen, BUT It's gonna take a hell of a lot more than a petition to get those people back together.

I for one am WITH Avninder on this. I’d love to see it happen. The thread isn’t about what we think might or will happen, which naturally tends towards the cynical. It’s about wanting it and supporting it.

This is after all the fans forum. A hard-core if you like. We’re a barometer for the band. If we demonstrate the positivity of the idea, you never know. However if we’re all dead against it, or worse still, mute, then it gives Liz, Robin and Simon totally the wrong sign. AND… a gift-wrapped reason not to bother trying.

Things always look bad when they are bad. Like now, in the aftermath of Coachella. But those were not defining events. Old news = chip paper. Yes of course it brings out the cynic in all of us. So we can write smugly and cleverly about flying pigs and fax machines. Being positive is far braver.

There he is! The fluffy optimist! Well this fluffy optimist suddenly saw another favourite band reform in 2000 after 15 years (Mike) of vicious spite. I enjoyed 11 gigs, a proper new album, two acoustic albums and a colossal live album. Above all, I had great times and so did the band. They were better than ever, live.

To be given something is wonderful. To be given something wonderful back, that you thought you’d lost, is truly a gift. Think back to when Coachella was ON. You were (most of you) pretty deliriously happy at the thought of it. THAT’D be how you’ll feel again if ever it were to happen. Yes there are a few who, for their reasons, are honestly against the idea. Not merely cynical or downbeat at the present moment, but actually NOT in favour. To them I say, it’s your opinion, to be respectfully disagreed with. These people need not support any gig or release. It isn’t obligatory. They can stay at home playing HOLV and make tsk tsk sounds. I’d be THERE. Even if it went spectacularly badly. I’d be there as a supporter. They’ve been the best band they can so I’ll be the best supporter I can be.

Avninder, put me down as a yes.

I was trying to think of a clever, punning type tribute act name, cobining the two, but "Cocteau Fizz" seemed a bit lazy.

Any other ideas? This could be a cool alternative to a proper reunion!

In Japan, this is a popular 'sexual' fetish (the women farting, not the phobia about it)

I've seen a website that commemorates this, but I don't have the link anymore.

I personally feel that if their hearts aren't in it the music isn't going to be as rich and beautiful. It will be half ass in other words. Is this what we would want to remember them by? I agree...I would love nothing more to see them reunite, but I want them to give it their all or nothing.

Avninder
Feb-9-06, 4:24 PM
Yep, I'm tired of thinking what if... Tired of thinking instead of really doing something about things that seem to just happen in life. I don't want to take too much space here in this forum but if anybody is interested in sending suggestions of what or how the petition should read or sound like, please email me at:

avnindera@yahoo.com

I'll compile the responses before I make a final draft and if people are interested, I will post the final draft on this forum.

Wish us luck,

I'm not sure a petition would do it. I think the answer is...

set up a fund that people can contribute to which would go to pay the band for an appearance.

If I had it, I'd spend it! But since I don't, maybe the miracle of group efforts could do it...

How much money do you think it would take to get liz to get over her fear of the emotional toll a reunion would take on her?

I'd say anyone can bottle up their emotions for one night and a month of private practice session for a very reasonable $400K US. Since there are about 400 people who are on this board, that comes to...only $1000 apiece!

I bet some of you would do it. After all, some spent 200+ on tickmets and planes etc for coachella! Let's do it.

Only $83 per person per month for a year!! And then we'd throw a massive private party only for ourselves, and every fan could ask questions at a Q & A session, and the top ten donors get to play the theremin or fx processed backing guitar onstage.

What a deal!!
I'm in!!

We would also need a fund to get the Brits over to the USA. I doubt it would be organised for over here. Robin seems to like LA.

Similar idea but much more dancy pop. They got a little more sophisticated later in their career with a few slower numbers. To be honest considering where they came from (Eurovision) and their target audience (children) I never thought they were that bad. They made a pleasant cheerful sound.

What we've made of the music is separate from the music they've made.

True...and they're not obliged to give us any more than what they've given already, which is more than enough...

but I wish they would do it for fun.

I was in a band, and after awhile I got so sick of the bassist, who smoked like a chimney and was so sarcastic and negative all the time...

So we broke up...and years later, I just saw him again and he was normal and talking about his baby niece in a positive attitude...

so we hooked up and screwed around and forgot all the old stuff...

and it was fun.

Doesn't liz sing for fun? For the pleasure of having the breath of god in her mouth?

And I know robin and simon and will love it enough to do it, and they seemed willing to do it before, and music still is very much alive for them as evidenced by their solo work.

So put aside the past, chickens, and enjoy yourselves a little bit!!

(And tape it, too, on digital video if possible, thanks!).

People are capricious, destructive and unmindful of their gifts sometimes, aren't they? We can't know what's best for them, but sometimes it becomes unbearable not to say something. Of course we can and should wish - it's part of their legacy that we do.
