Cocteau Twins: Vinyl vs. Vinyl

Many CT fans have argued that the Japanese vinyl releases sound better than their North American counterparts. It's been said that the Japanese editions are: warmer, crisper, cleaner or louder. What do you think?

Don't think I've ever played any of my Japanese pressings.

Well, get on it, Captain! This poll can't wait forever...

I, myself, have no CT vinyl, Japanese or otherwise.

That's why I voted that I'd never heard any of them

This thread may be a little too CT-geeky for the general populace here.

"Many"?

Yers...I'm sick of reading heated debates in here on that very subject.

Everytime I hear someone saying that Japanese vinyl version are just as good as American pressings, it gets me out of mind pretty badly.

I've never heard the japanese editions, but what I've learned is that U.K. vinyl from 4AD (and assuming japanese also) is made with a substantially thicker vinyl than the ones in north america. This usually means deeper grooves and a better sound with less long term wear. I realized this years ago when comparing my import of Filigree and Shadow with a canadian produced ct ep I bought.

Really? That totally contradicts my own experience!

Back in the 80s when I was buying lots of vinyl (easily half of it was imported from UK/Europe), I found that the UK stuff was generally more throwaway-quality. US vinyl was heavy, with the protective lip, whereas the UK/EU stuff was generally thinner (would droop if you held it from one side) and rarely has the lip. US jackets are printed on heavy gauge white card stock, and the UK/EU jackets were often (but not always) printed on that thin, rough, brown trash paper with a white veneer over it. And my big pet peeve: UK inner sleeves are almost always folded inside-out, with the rough surface against the disc, and the shiny side on the outside! DUHHH! Shoddy stuff, folks.

Of course, it may be different, now that vinyl is becoming a boutique thing.

Japanese vinyl has always had a good reputation, and I think it's well founded, though I have never owned any CT vinyl pressed in Japan. Their standard pressing is what the rest of the world calls "audiophile quality". The relatively few Japanese records I've ever owned all sounded really great, even if the music was shitty in retrospect.

Fair point, but it's nothing to be proud of, Dave.
