Robin Gushing Lumière

I'll admit to owning a bootleg of Robin's live show from La Maroquinerie - Paris (1 APRIL 2005). I don't know who made the bootleg but I have to say I'm so glad they did. Since Lumière wasn't officially released and after having seen him performing live with the film....you're left wanting to re-visit that moment again.

Those of us who've been lucky enough to catch one of these shows surely knows what I'm talking about. Just being able to listen to it all again certainly doesn't compare to being there in the moment but it's like hearing something special, something you were never meant to hear perhaps more than once or a few times. Yet here I am once again in awe of it all. The show itself is played out so uniquely with each performance as he varies the sounds, the timing and the tones, affecting the overall structure of the performance.

I recall speaking with Robin over lunch, after having seen him perform Lumière the previous night, and what he said struck a chord with me. He helped me to recognise and understand that perhaps this particular piece wasn't meant for wide release, but instead the beauty of it lies in the performance itself. It cannot be re-created, and recording it in some ways cheapens the integrity of his artistry.

Maybe I don't know what I'm really trying to say. All I know is that I suppose I'm contradicting myself because as I sit here listening to the recording I am content with knowing it's a mere attempt at re-living the experience of seeing him perform it live. In the end, I just absolutely love his instrumental work.

I don't want to hear it. I'm hoping Robin will do Athens. I'd also like to see the film, you know?
