Default NME goth-a-go-go

FYI (courtesy of the always incredible DJ Martian)

In the latest issue of Uncut there is an advert for the next NME Originals magazine, that is featured on Goth. The advert mentions these artists:

The Cure
Siouxsie & the Banshees
The Sisters of Mercy
Bauhaus
The Mission
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
The Creatures
Joy Division
Cocteau Twins
The Glove
The Birthday Party
Southern Death Cult
All About Eve
Fields of the Nephilim

On Sale October 19th, in time for Halloween - how predictable and opportunistic.

I wonder if they have raided the Melody Maker archives as NME were hardly massive champions of goth.

your inner goth appeal, perhaps?

to these ears, every band on that list pales in comparison to CT.

imo, they moved far beyond the likes of goth even as early as their 3rd album.

Liz graced the band with her own private & delicate floral patterns and things were henceforth never quite the same.

such is what puts them in another league entirely.

their ability to transcend the many pitfalls of (goth) mannerisms.

The Cocteau Twins never seemed to scream "Goth" to me. Though... that was before my time. Whenever I hear "Goth" music... it always has awful bassy vocals that make me want to laugh, Like Herman Munster decided he wanted to be a pop star.

really?

The Glove = Robert Smith (Cure) and Steve Severin (The Banshees). actually, i don't think it was that great, but real Cure-heads get into it. read about it here.

The Birthday Party = what Nick Cave did before the Bad Seeds, although that totally does not explain it. The Birthday Party were strange and noisy and loud and really damned cool. i have this one and it's stunning. wouldn't really call it goth though -- more like psychotic punk.

Southern Death Cult = what eventually became just The Cult. and yes, there were more gothy before they became heavy metal. this is actually a pretty good album. read about it here.

hope that helps.

great one Clay!

yes, much "goth" music has become self-parodying. have you heard of Voltaire -- he is a parody of the self-parodying Goth acts. terribly annoying, imho.

yes.....especially for not knowing about the birthday party.....a band that were a huge influence on early cocteau twins. (but i still love you, johnny!)

as for cocteau twins (note no use of the word THE), i've never considered them goth at all...but this question has been rasied here before. i think it's just laziness on the part of those in the music industry who think it's easier to label artists that perhaps sound slightly different than the standard.

i like many of the bands fred mentions in his first post but i would never consider any of them goth. i dunno, maybe it's just because i really hate the term that i refuse to use it.

ps.....i'm moving this thread to pandora's box

i'm sure the whole cocteaus/goth thing only stems from garlands - wihch came out around that time and really could only be pigeonholed as such at that time. fortunately, after that people realised that the cocteaus couldn't be pigeonholed, and subsequently the term 'cocteauesque' was coined - aptly anough for those aware of Jean Cocteau's works, as there is a shared sense of elegance and sophistication and beauty.
goth, however, sadly has nothing to do with gothicism and reflects nothing of pugin's architecture or mary shelley's or brad stoker's well structured literature and is surely the most misnamed genre ever.

i would also never call the cure or the banshees 'goth' as they've also followed the whole punk to aesthete type evolution as the cocteaus - do we need a new term or to just accept each band as who they are?

I agree, goth is a terrible term. Even Bauhaus, who are described as the "godfathers of goth" were more glam then anything else

Several of you need to look at yourself in the mirror and say "Cocteau Twins is a goth band and I like it" until it can feel pleasant and enjoyable.
It's a genre. That's all it is. And it's accurate. Be thankful your favorite band chooses to unintentionally expand it rather than purposely try to conform to it. Besides, only a person surrounded solely by goth records would say some of these things... and nobody likes a braggart.

Nice to see I'm not the only one from the Land Of 10,000 Lakes here, Allimart. Aren't you the one from Zim?

Just a quick note to say that 'Southern Death Cult' became 'Death Cult' before becoming 'The Cult', at which point they got a little bit enamoured with themselves I always thought and tried to turn themslves into a stadium band. Never quite worked for me really.
